ALGEBRA TRAP

The most common errors that occur when putting the equation of a hyperbola in standard form are those that arise from not handling the minus sign between the x- and y-terms correctly. Group the terms for each variable, and carefully factor a negative common factor out of all the terms in the group that begins with a negative square term. When completing the square, remember to multiply the new constant by that negative factor before adding to the other side.

Complete the square, remembering to adjust the constant for the greatest common factor (GCF) of 4 and the GCF of –1.
